At the Cryptography and Privacy Enginnering Group (ENCRYPTO), we offer research-oriented topics for Bacholor's and Master's theses. In many cases, very good results can be published at international IT-Security or Cryptography conferences.

In the area of Cryptography Engineering, we optimize cryptographic protocols for secure processing of private data and build tools to make them accessible to non-experts. The tools and compiler frameworks we build allow automatic optimization of such protocols and their generation from high-level specification.

In the area of Privacy Engineering, we analyze privacy in existing systems and apply cryptographic protocols to preserve privacy in various applications, often spanning multiple disciplines.

For examples, see our detailed descriptions of research topics, as well as ongoing and finished theses.

Application for Bachelor or Master Thesis

Above we list announced thesis topics and topics of general interest. We often have further thesis topics that are not announced and we are also open to discuss innovative self-proposed thesis topics that match our research profile.

Writing a thesis at ENCRYPTO usually requires the following:

  • Successful completion of the course “Computersystemsicherheit” (or equivalent)
  • For Master's theses: Basic knowledge in applied cryptography, e.g., by successful completion of the course “Introduction to Cryptography” and ideally also our specialized course “Cryptographic Protocols (CRYPROT)
  • Ideally, some programming experience, as we often build software prototypes
  • Very good command of English; German is not required
  • High degree of self-motivation, reliability, diligence, creativity, and the ability to work independently

To allow us to find a suitable thesis topic, please send a letter of motivation describing what you are interested in and the courses you attended successfully, ideally in form of a current transcript of records to .
